Why we support arts & culture:
In one simple sentence, how could we ignore one of the cornerstones of our daily life – arts & culture, especially with such a rich history in our home country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?
Our involvement in arts & culture is also the story of two men, Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, Chairman and CEO at Abdul Latif Jameel and his son Fady Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel, President of Community Jameel International, both passionate lovers of the arts.
It has been their keen commitment to foster the art scene and to empower artists and creative entrepreneurs in the Kingdom and further afield, which has led Community Jameel to create and support a variety of arts initiatives.
Our cultural journey started when we to decided to partner with the V&A Museum in London to establish the Jameel Gallery for Islamic Art. Subsequently, we launched the first Jameel Prize in 2006; an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition.
In Saudi Arabia, we are the founding partner of two initiatives: ‘Edge of Arabia’ and ‘Arabian Wings’; both providing a platform for contemporary art from Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Their aims are to support artists with training, to give them exposure through exhibitions and publications, and to encourage artistic dialogue with the rest of the world.
For examples, in Jeddah, we have collaborated with the municipality in restoring some of the public sculptures created a long time ago by well-known sculptors and the creation of a sculpture museum at the Corniche.
In the U.A.E., we support ‘The Archive’ in Dubai, a library and café with a busy events calendar that is dedicated to give a fresh perspective to Middle Eastern and North African Art & Literature.
Our goal? A thriving contemporary art scene in the region. Many more projects are in the pipeline, not only to foster the contemporary art form the region but also to support creative entrepreneurs in growing their businesses.
